From Oasis to Adventure: Sandboarding in the Stunning Dunes of Huacachina, Peru

In the heart of the Peruvian desert lies a hidden gem, known for its tranquility, promises for adventure, and unique landscapes. Welcome to Huacachina, Peru, located about 5 hours south of Lima. As an adventure traveler seeking something unique, I found myself drawn to this oasis, eager to experience not just the beauty but also the thrill of sandboarding.

The Journey to Huacachina

The journey to Huacachina began in the city of Ica, where the vibrant culture and friendliness of the locals instantly wowed me. After a short bus ride we arrived at Huacachina, and was greeted by a beautiful lagoon surrounded by palm trees and sand dunes. It was a surreal sight and help build up my excitement to sandboard.

Preparing for Sandboarding

We met up with our tour guide who provided us with all of the necessary gear for sand boarding. Surprisingly I was not required to wear a helmet during the experience. After a safety briefing, we set off in UTVs towards the sand dunes. This is where my heart started to race with anticipation.

The Climb and the View

The trek up the steep sandy dunes was not an easy feat. Every step felt like a workout, but the breathtaking views made it work the effort. After reaching the top, I stood in awe of the endless sea of sand and blue skies. 

The Thrill of Sandboarding

We had the option to go on our stomachs or our backs, me being the adventure seeker that I am chose to ride on my stomach. I took a moment to gather my thoughts and then I was OFF!! The initial plunge was incredibly exhilarating, like a sensation that I have never felt before. I only did one run because the trek back up the sand dunes isn't for the weary. I loved every single moment of it. As the sunset on our adventure, it gave me a moment to reflect on how fortunate I was to experience such beauty and thrill in one day.

Sandboarding in Huacachina was truly one of my favorite highlights on my trip to Peru. It is an unforgettable experience for thrill seekers and adrenaline junkies, if you are like myself. Sandboarding in Peru will leave you with memories that last a lifetime!
